VeriFone Entertaining Motorists At The Pump

ISO & Agent Weekly | Wednesday, January 4, 2012

VeriFone Systems Inc. is working with NBCUniversal Inc. on a system that plays videos on gas-station payment terminal screens.

VeriFone launched Paymedia for its Secure PumpPay terminals as an add-on for gas stations in May. The product presents advertising on the pump’s screen and enables stations to accept new payment types.

VeriFone likens the NBC deal for gas stations to its practice of presenting videos in taxicabs.

“The pump experience has a lot of very similar characteristics to the taxi experience,” says Chris Polos, VeriFone’s vice president in charge of global media sales. “You are captive, and it’s accountable. It’s only running when somebody is engaging in a transaction,” he says.

In other news, Accessories manufacturer Brighton Collectibles has equipped clerks in more than 150 of its stores nationwide with a VeriFone mobile point-of-sale system, VeriFone says.

More than 300 iPod Touch systems equipped with credit card readers using GlobalBay Mobile POS software allow Brighton clerks to accept payments anywhere in the store, thus reducing checkout lines, VeriFone said in a press release.

Shoppers aware of modern online payment technologies expect to see a similar option during an in-store experience, Sandeep Bhanote, VeriFone vice president and general manager of the Mobile Retail Systems business, said in the release.

“Brighton Collectibles is using GlobalBay to heighten the level of engagement between customers and store associates, leading to increased sales and greater efficiency of operations,” Bhanote said.
